The Sutherland potential [1][2] is given by

Φ12(r)={∞;r≤σ−ϵ(σr)γ;r>σ

where Φ12(r) is the intermolecular pair potential, r:=|r1−r2| is the distance between site 1 and site 2, σ is the radius of the central hard core, ϵ is the energy well depth (ϵ>0), and γ is a parameter that controls the interaction range. For example, for γ=6 the potential look like
