van der Waals mixing rules[edit]

The van der Waals equation of state can be written as

(p+an2V2)(V−nb)=nRT

For mixtures one replaces a and b with expressions that depend on the composition:

a→∑in∑jnxixjaij

and

b→∑in∑jnxixjbij

where

aij=(1−kij)(aiiajj)i≠j

and

bij=(biibjj)2i≠j

where kij is obtained from a fit.
