Wertheim's first order thermodynamic perturbation theory (TPT1) [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] can be expressed as:

ZTPT1=pρkBT=mZmonomer−(m−1)(1+ρmonomer∂lng(σ)∂ρmonomer)

where Zmonomer is the equation of state of the monomer system and m is the number of monomers in the chains.

For example, in the study of the flexible hard sphere chain model one can use the Carnahan-Starling equation of state for Zmonomer, leading to

ZFHSC=m1+η+η2−η3(1−η)3−(m−1)1+η−(η2/2)(1−η)(1−η/2)=1+m4η−2η2(1−η)3−(m−1)5η−2η2(1−η)(2−η)
