Binary phase diagrams

Binary phase diagrams for liquids and gasses. Studied by Johannis Jacobus van Laar using the Van der Waals equation of state [1][2][3][4][5]. The six major types of binary mixture phase diagrams, as identified by Scott and Konynenburg [6][7] (in the pressure-temperature plane) are given by (solid lines: vapour pressure of the two components, blue dashed lines are three phase lines and red dashed lines are critical lines) [8][9]:

Type I[edit]

The two substances are of similar chemical types and their critical properties are comparable in magnitude [10], for example, a mixture of argon and krypton
