The 9-3 Lennard-Jones potential is related to the Lennard-Jones potential. It has the following form:

Φ12(r)=332ϵ[(σr)9−(σr)3].

where Φ12(r) is the intermolecular pair potential and r:=|r1−r2|. The minimum value of Φ(r) is obtained at r=rmin, with

  • Φ(rmin)=−ϵ,
  • rminσ=31/6

Applications[edit]

It is commonly used to model the interaction between the particles of a fluid with a flat structureless solid wall or vice versa (Ref. 1).

Interaction between a solid and a fluid molecule[edit]

Let us consider the space divided in two regions:

  • x<0: this region is occupied by a diffuse solid with density ρs composed of 12-6 Lennard-Jones atoms

with parameters σs and ϵa

Our aim is to compute the total interaction between this solid and a molecule located at a position xf>0. Such an interaction can be computed using cylindrical coordinates.

The interaction will be:

ΦW(x)=4ϵsfρs∫02πdϕ∫−∞−xdz∫0∞dr[σ12r(r2+z2)6−σ6r(r2+z2)3].
ΦW(x)=8πϵsfρs∫−∞−xdz[σ1210(r2+z2)5−σ64(r2+z2)2]r=∞r=0.
ΦW(x)=8πϵsfρs∫−∞−xdz[σ1210z10−σ64z4];

ΦW(x)=8πϵsfρs[−σ1290z9+σ612z3]z=−∞z=−x;
ΦW(x)=4πϵsfρsσ33[σ915x9−σ32x3]
