The bulk modulus B gives the change in volume of a solid substance as the pressure on it is changed,

B=−V∂P∂V

The compressibility K or κ, is given by

κ=1B

The isothermal compressibility, κT is given by

κT=−1V∂V∂P|T=1ρ∂ρ∂P|T

(Note: in Hansen and McDonald the isothermal compressibility is written as χT). where ρ is the particle number density given by

ρ=NV

where N is the total number of particles in the system, i.e.

N=∫Vρ(r,t)dr

Compressibility of an Ideal Gas

From the ideal gas law we see that

Z=pVNkBT=1
