The Gaussian overlap model was developed by Bruce J. Berne and Philip Pechukas [1]and is given by Eq. 3 in the aforementioned reference:

Φ12(u1,u2,r)=ϵ(u1,u2)exp[−r2σ2(u1,u2,r^)]

where Φ12(r) is the intermolecular pair potential, ϵ(u1,u2) and σ(u1,u2,r^) are angle dependent strength and range parameters, and r^ is a unit vector. It is worth noting that not long afterwards Stillinger proposed a very similar model known as the Gaussian core model [2]

Phase diagram

The phase diagram of the Gaussian-core model has been calculated by Prestipino, Saija and Giaquinta [3].
