Virial

The virial of a central interaction potential v(r) is defined by

V(r)= \frac{dv(r)}{dr} r = - f(r) r .

Apart from historical reasons, the virial features prominently classical thermodynamics (for example, see virial coefficients) and in simulation (see: virial pressure).
